My thought about engineering the spacetime of Athens environs did not change the outlook of the streets and there remained as hot and dry and shade-less as it was a few seconds earlier. As my idea about planting more trees in the sidewalks to provide for shade and reduce heat and dryness, as the leaves would have absorbed the hot rays and would have alleviated the burden of the town-dwellers.
The entire idea came, as I walked, exhausted by the heat in the grossly populated Athens inner area. High-rise flats crashed tight, one next to each other, narrow side-walks, absence of trees. When suddenly at the turn of the next corner, an oasis revealed itself over to my left side. Several inter-connected streets with tall trees from either side. The lure was beguiling, though not in my direction, I turned and walked along this street under the welcoming shade. The gain, though not overwhelming, was substantial, the walk under the afternoon heat bearable, almost pleasant. The thought occurred to me, that all the streets in the vicinity were alike, at least in the beginning. But in the process of accommodating more and more people they fell under a relentless axe, destroyed forever. How much better, would have been if all the streets were spared from the uncompromising ill-thought progress. A forest instead of an oasis.
Now, it is impossible. There is no return. The very same people dwelling in this run-down environment will protest vehemently, will fight tooth-and-claw to preserve the little patch they call home. The opportunity has gone past and lost forever.
But wait a minute. There is a time when a change could have been possible, before the situation became irreversible. Before the greedy developers cut down the budding trees to erect their hideous monstrosities. It is all a matter of space and time, spacetime. We are talking about spacetime engineering.
Yes, truly. Time travel has not been invented, yet. But not for long. It is going to be invented still. Authors, which I need to identify, analyzing the possibilities of time travel had found a workable hypothesis for building a time travel machine by creating a time vortex. The time vortex would enable time travelers to go back and forth in time. So, even if a time machine is not ready yet, it will be and all there is a need for, is just a seed of an idea. And there the idea is ...
Nothing happened, the streets remained as are, desolate and inhospitable. May be it's all down to the parallel worlds quantum interpretation. The spacetime engineering exercise has affected another world that runs parallel to mine or ours but not the world we live in. Or may be due to the stipulation presented by the authors I mentioned before. Time travelers can go back and forth in time but only to the time limit set by the onset of the time vortex. Only onwards in time.
The time machine has not been created yet. There is no hope.
